TITLE

Killer Volcanoes

Overview

Scientists who are experts in natural disasters identify the most extreme catastrophes to have hit the Earth and piece together exactly what happened from the evidence left in their wake.

In This Episode

Mass graves in London and a sulfur spike in ice sheet cores had long pointed to a mystery volcanic eruption leading to famine in Europe in the 13th century. Only in 2013 did French and Indonesian scientists link Lombok ash and pumice deposits and ancient historical texts to pinpoint a mega-eruption near present-day Mount Rinjani. What is now Indonesia's second tallest volcano (3,726m) once stood in the shadow of Mount Samalas, some 500m higher. Evidence now points to a 1257 blast that was one of the largest in historical times, collapsing Mount Samalas and burying a Lombok kingdom in a "Pompei of the East" that remains to be discovered.

Jungle Run Production Services

Yano of Team Jungle escorted crew and vulcanologist contributors to Indonesia's most active volcano (Mount Merapi), on a camping expedition into the summit caldera of Indonesia's second-highest volcano (Mount Rinjani), and into treasured archives that recount one of the most devastating volcanic eruptions in the last 7,000 years.
