In This Episode

Silk Ceiling explores the challenges women face in pushing higher from Europe to Asia. In India our protagonist is a young journalist who's pushing the equal rights conversation out into the public, and it's not easy. In Indonesia we meet Ayu Utami, a famous women's writer who is fighting a system of marriage laws that favor men over women. Aiysia a woman from rural Java is fighting for equal rights after her husband leaves her while Nunung Nurnaningrum from PEKKA, a women's rights NGO, helps her navigate the law. Meanwhile, in a heartwarming turn of events, Aiysia and her friends join a women's filmmaker cooperative and learn how to tell their own stories.

But change needs pressure and Ayu Utami is at the forefront. Meanwhile, Nursyahbani Katjasungkana from the Women's Association for Justice, while she agrees with Ms Utami that the laws need to change, questions whether the time is right to fight in the Indonesian courts.

Through the voices of women and men, Silk Ceiling takes a deep dive into the reality of women's lives, and what is being done about it in India and Indonesia.

Joe Yaggi was the Project Director for Silk Ceiling in Indonesia and chose Patrick Lavaud as DoP. Working closely with colleagues from TVE, Joe and his team sought out and interviewed the leading voices of Indonesia's women's movement and the women who are cutting through Asia's Silk Ceiling.
