Overview

For more than 20 years naturalist Steve Backshall has dreamed of navigating New Guinea's uncharted Baliem River. This two-part series follows him and his team as they travel from its source to the sea.

We love working with Steve Backshall so I was pumped beyond belief when BBC Science called and said, 'Hey Joe, we know about your experience in wildlife and natural history, but don't you also have a background in whitewater?' I'd done a first descent of a segment of the Baliem River in Papua way back in 1996 and had dreamed of doing this river from source to sea ever since.

But little did we know the adventure that awaited. From the helicopter that literally fell out of the sky before restarting on the survey, to the threat of kidnapping that forced a serious change of plans. From kayakers getting sick requiring helivac to a drone going down and getting a new one in from Jakarta in record speed. Down the Mighty River with Steve Backshall was an adventure of a lifetime and we were all fortunate to be a part of this historic expedition and shoot.
